Pepe Escobar has published a book entitled "Empire of Chaos". This is his description of what the world of international politics has become under the current leadership of the USA. He believes that the US has created "a dysfunctional global system now breeding mayhem and blowback across the Greater Middle East into Africa and even to the peripheries of Europe."(1) Here he is referring to the US/NATO invasion/destabilization of Afghanisan, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, Syria, and Ukraine.
President Putin has explained the current situation in the world as follows:
"The Cold War ended, but it did not end with the signing of a peace treaty with clear and transparent agreements on respecting existing rules or creating new rules and standards. It seems that the so-called 'victors' in the Cold War decided to pressure events and reshape the world to suit their own needs and interests. If the existing system of international relations, international law and the checks and balances in place get in the way of these aims, this system has been declared worthless, outdated and in need of immediate demolition.
"The very notion of 'national sovereignty' has become a relative value for most countries. In essence, what is being proposed is the formula: the greater the loyalty towards the world's sole power centre, the greater this or that regime's legitimacy."(2)
In the Empire of Chaos there is no recognized international law.
Putin explains that since the end of the Cold War the US does not "respect existing rules" that were set up at the end of WW II. Instead they have "declared worthless" the previously existing "system of international relations, international law and the checks and balances." Further, there is no respect for "national sovereignty" in that the US/NATO decides who are "legitimate" rulers in a country rather than the people themselves. Thus the Taliban, Saddam Hussein, Colonel Gaddafi, Bashar al Assad, and Viktor Yanukovych in the Ukraine were all deemed by the US not to be "legitimate" leaders of their countries and were removed. In the case of Viktor Yanukovych, he was legally elected to the position of President in 2010, but was deposed and replaced because he did not work for closer economic and political ties with the EU.
International Law and the UN Charter
The "system of international relations, international law and the checks and balances" which Putin refers to is none other than the UN Charter. A little digging reveals that Article 2 of the UN Charter has the following two principles:
"The Organization is based on the principle of the sovereign equality of all its Members.
"All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations."(3)
These principles provide the basis for the claim that President George Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair are war criminals. Like Adoph Hitler's Germany, they violated these principles and should be tried as his government was. We don't hear much about this in the mainstream media. Why is that? Because the editors and owners of our media believe, along with the US and NATO, that these rules are "worthless", out of date, irrelevant, etc.
So, instead of having a system of international relations and international law based in the UN Charter, there is now no system of international law. There is only the wishes and interests of the US. This is our replacement for international law. This is the Empire of Chaos. There is no law as such, just the old dictum: Might makes Right. And what is left of the UN has been pulled into supporting war crimes like those committed by Israel. As a US commentator has said: "The United Nations is a 'Western institution' that systematically supports the crimes of the Israeli regime and only holds meetings when Israel is threatened."(4) Here the term "west" it used to denote the US empire and its satellites like Australia.
What does the Empire of Chaos have to do with the TPP?
The connection is simple. With the TPP all national laws are equally "declared worthless." Why? If a nation's law hinders the profits of a multinational corporation, it must either be withdrawn or the nation must pay a hefty fine. The similarity is the feature of lawlessness. Lawlessness in the international realm and lawlessness in each nation. No laws, no rules, no regulations, just the wishes of the mighty and the wealthy.
With the TPP, our political future will be different.
The TPP opens the door to a lawless world. Of course this is why our governments are working so hard to keep the reality from the public. They may succeed, but if they do, it will be the beginning of an even bigger fight where the issues will be all out in the open. This fight will show quite clearly who supports such a lawless world and who opposes it. In the end most people will stand up and fight against such an insane world once they see what it means for them.
If the TPP is adopted in Australia, all the puppet politicians who have supported these policies or sat by as they were introduced will be seen for what they are - traitors to their own country. Another result will be that some new political lines will be drawn that have nothing to do with the mindless "left" /"right" labels used in our political thinking now. You will be judged on whether you are with us, the people of Australia, or with them, the TPP, the multinationals, and the war criminals. So which side are you on??
